The year was 1949.  It was the year that Sunset Ridge was built.  It also marked the end of a decade that was dominated by World War II.  Soldiers were com-ing home.  America was prospering and it was truly a time for celebration.  If you turned on the radio you would hear the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy
Gillespie, or the Jack Benny show.  At the movies, you would see films starring Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant or Katherine Hepburn.  A new movement of abstract painting called abstract expressionism had also emerged and was in full swing by 1949.
		The movement of abstract expression-ism does not describe any single par-ticular style of painting, but rather a general attitude.  The artists, called abstract expressionists, valued indivi-duality and spontaneous improvisation above anything else.  More attention was paid to the quality of brushstrokes and texture and there was glorification in the act of painting itself as a means of visual communication.  Their art was an attempt to transfer pure emotion directly onto the canvas and their belief was in freedom of expression.
